The son of a clergyman, John Millar was a student of Lord Kames and later of Adam Smith at Glasgow, where he was made professor of law in 1761. A leading member of the Scottish historical school, he was an associate of Thomas Reid and taught the son of Lord Kames and the nephews of David Hume and Adam Smith.
