ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Catherine Jemmat

(1720 ca.-1766)

Catherine Jemmat, daughter of Admiral John Yeo, was born at Exeter. She attended a boarding school, learned French, entertained a number of suitors, and lost her social reputation. Jemmat married a Plymouth silk merchant she describes as abusive in her Memoirs (1762). She apparently had court connections, and a number of noble persons subscribed to her Poems (1766).
