John Sargent

(1750-1831)


John Sargent, the younger son of the M.P. of the same name (1714-91) was educated at Eton College (1760-67) and studied at St. John's College, Cambridge (1767) and Lincoln's Inn (1770); at Eton he began a lifelong friendship with William Hayley. Sargent was elected to Parliament from Seaford in 1790 and represented various constituencies until his retirement in 1826. As a politician he was aligned with William Pitt.
