The son of John Bampfylde, MP for Exeter and Devon, C.W. Bampfylde was educated at Winchester College (1731-38) and St. John's College, Oxford. He studied painting with Richard Phelps of Porlock. He did illustrations for Christopher Anstey's An Election Ball (1776) and for Richard Graves's Columella, or, The Distressed Anchoret (1779). His landscape paintings were highly regarded, as was his landscape park at Hestercombe.
