William Browne of Tavistock

(1590 ca.-1645 ca.)

William Browne studied at Exeter College Oxford and the Inner Temple (1611); he returned to Oxford in 1624 (created M.A. 1624) as tutor to Robert Dormer, later earl of Carnarvon, with whom he travelled in France. As a young man Browne was the friend or associate of Ben Jonson (who wrote a commendatory poem), Michael Drayton, Christopher Brooke, George Wither, and John Davies of Hereford. Little is known of his later years.
