Not the historian of the same name (d. 1737). A native of Ayershire, Alexander Cunningham was professor of civil law at Edinburgh (1698) before he was removed for political reasons in 1710; he spent his remaining years at The Hague. Cunningham attacks Richard Bentley in his edition of Horace (1721).
