The son of the diarist, this John Evelyn was tutored by Milton's nephew Edward Phillips before entering Trinity College Oxford (1667) and the Middle Temple (1663). In 1690 he was made one of the chief clerks of the treasury and in 1691 a commissioner of the revenue in Ireland.
