Archibald Campbell was educated at Eton and Glasgow; he served under Marlborough, was created Earl of Islay (1705) and supported the Union. He held important posts in both Scotland and England, advising Robert Walpole on Scottish affairs. Later, Campbell was keeper of the great seal (1731-61) and chancellor of Aberdeen University; he became the third Duke of Argyll in 1743. The fourth duke patronized Henry Fielding.
