Dr. John Cosens was born at Southampton, the son of an attorney of the same name. He attended Trinity College Cambridge and was Vicar of St. Martin's, West Drayton (1760-65). He took a D.D. from Edinburgh (1769) and was minister of Teddington (1761-91). Cosens was chaplain to the earl of Denbigh and tutor to Princess Charlotte. He seems to have been acquainted with Horace Walpole. His Economy of Beauty was several times reprinted.
