Samuel Ogden was educated at Manchester School and St. John's College Cambridge (B.A. 1737, Fellow 1739. M.A. 1741, D.D. 1753, senior Fellow 1758). He was master of the Free School at Halifax (1744-53). A classical scholar and orientalist, Ogden was patronized by the Duke of Newcastle; he preached at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Cambridge (1753-61) and was incumbent of Lawford and Stansfield (1766-78). He was the Woodwardian Professor of Geology at Cambridge (1764-78).
