Robert Holmes was educated at Winchester and New College (Chancellor's Prize, 1769, Fellow; M.A. 1774; D.D. 1789). He was rector of Stanton St. John, Bampton Lecturer in 1782, Poetry Professor 1783-93. Holmes was successively prebendary of Salisbury, Hereford, and Christ Church, and dean of Westminster in 1804. In addition to publishing poems, he was a Biblical scholar and theologican.
