ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

David Parkes

(1763-1833)

David Parkes was born near Hales-Owen in Shropshire. After a dame-school education he served an apprenticeship to a japanner in Birmingham; disliking that occupation, he attracted the patronage of the local gentry interested in his artistic skills, beginning a career as a teacher and eventually becoming master of the Shrewsbury Free-school. Despite his poverty, Parkes became a noted collector and antiquary, contributing both illustrations and articles to the Gentleman's Magazine over a period of decades.
