1675 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Abraham Fraunce

Edward Phillips, in Theatrum Poetarum (1675) 2:3.

Abraham France, a Versifier in Queen Elizabeth's time, who imitated Latin measure in English Verse, wrote his Iviechurch and some mother things in Hexameter, some also in Hexameter and Pentameter, nor was he altogether singular in this way of writing; for Sir Philip Sidny in the pastoral interludes of his Arcadia, uses not only these but all other sorts of Latin Measure, in which no wonder he is follow'd by so few, since they neither become the English nor any other Modern Language.
