1802 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Thomas Nashe

Joseph Ritson, Biographia Poetica (1802) 284.

THOMAS NASHE has introduc'd several pieces of poetry in his numerous pamphlets: particularly some lines, vehemently passionate, in Pierce Penniless his supplication to the devill, 1593, which mistress Cooper pronounces the strongest picture of rage and despair that she ever met with. He is say'd to have been born at Leostoffe in Suffolk, was educated at St. Johns college Cambridge, and dye'd before 1606.
