1719 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Barnabe Barnes

Giles Jacob, in Poetical Register: or the Lives and Characters of the English Dramatick Poets (1719) 12.

An Author, who liv'd in the Time of King James I. He wrote one Play call'd,

The Devil's Charter; a Tragedy, play'd before the King, 1607. This Tragedy seems to be written in Imitation of Shakspeare's old Play, call'd PERICLES, Prince of Tyre; which gives and Account of the Life and Death of Pope Alexander the VIth. For as Shakspeare raises Gower, and old English Bard, for his introduction in that Play; so this Author revives Guicciardine for the same purpose. And in the last Age, as well as the present Times, the Poets frequently introduc'd dumb Representations, which were very taking with the Spectators.
