1769 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

George Tooke

James Granger, in Biographical History of England (1769; 1824) 3:97-98.

This gentleman as we learn from Sir Henry Chauncy, was second son of Walter Took, of —, in the parish of Bishop's Hatfield, in the county of Herford, esq. His first lady was Elizabeth, second daughter of Richard Sidley, esq. After her demise, he married Mary, daughter of Thomas Cornish, or Conisgy, esq. He died without issue by either of his wives.

There is a small octavo published, but not written, by John Greaves. It is entitled, A Description of the Grand Signour's Seraglio, &c. which that great man has dedicated "To his honoured and truly noble friend, George Took, esq. of Popes," which was printed in 1650, and again in 1653.
