1719 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. Henry Killigrew

Giles Jacob, in Poetical Register: or the Lives and Characters of the English Dramatick Poets (1719) 155-56.

A Person of eminent Wit in the Reign of King Charles I. who, at the Age of Seventeen, writ the following Play.

The Conspiracy; a Tragedy, acted at the Black-Fryars with Applause, 1638. Ben Johnson and my Lord Faulkland commended this Play, which created the Author some Envy. The first Impression was surreptitiously printed, without his Consent, whilst he was beyond Sea; so that, on his Return, he oblig'd the World with a new Edition, under the Title of PALLANTUS and EUDORA, 1653.
