John, the 3rd son [of John Stedman], born in 1710, was, in 1740, appointed surgeon to the North British dragoons, or Scots Greys. He afterwards practised as a physician in Dunfermline, and subsequently settled in Edinburgh. Besides several medical treatises, he was the author of Laelius and Hortensia, or Thoughts on the Nature and Objects of Taste and Genius. He succeeded to Little Seggie in 1765, and married Peggy, daughter of Robert Wellwood of Pitliver, Perthshire. He died in 1791.
