1762 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. Charles Churchill

William Rider, in Living Authors of Great Britain (1762) 21.

The Reverend Charles Churchill first discover'd his Talent for Poetry by writing the Rosciad, a severe Satire upon the Players. The Publication of this Poem having drawn upon him some severe Reflexions from the Critical Reviewers, he, in Revenge, published the Apology; wherein he has spar'd those Gentlemen, as little as he did before the Players. His Poetry is animated, but in some Places incorrect.
