1798 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Bp. Lewis Bagot

David Rivers, in Literary Memoirs of Living Authors (1798) 1:25.

Bishop of St. Asaph, and brother to the Right Hon. William, Lord Bagot: His Lordship was promoted to the See of St. Asaph upon the death of Dr. Jonathan Shipley, and widely differs from his predecessor in his political, as well as religious sentiments. Beside occasional single Sermons, he published in the year 1780, a volume of Sermons on the prophecies preached at Bishop Warburton's lecture, which are rigidly calvinistical, and in which are made some very severe strictures on the writings of Mr. Locke.
