1798 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. Richard Hole

David Rivers, in Literary Memoirs of Living Authors (1798) 1:270.

Of the City of Exeter. This gentleman published, in 1781, a Translation into English Verse, of Homer's Hymn to Ceres; in 1789, Arthur, or the Northern Enchantment, a poetical Romance; and, in 1797, Remarks on the Arabian Nights Entertainments, in a crown octavo volume. The two first of these performances are favourable testimonies of Mr. Hole's poetical talents; the latter displays considerable ingenuity, but is, we think, too trifling in subject and character to have merited so much attention from abilities like his.
