1792 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Sir William Jones

Anonymous, "Biographical List of Living English Poets" Gentleman's Magazine 62 (June 1792) 505.

Sir William Jones, the Orientalist, now a Judge in India, is son of a celebrated Mathematician, was educated at University College, Oxford, and afterwards called to the Bar, at which he practised till he left England. His very early acquirements in elegant literature, as his Latin Commentary on the Asiatic poetry evinces, his uncommon facility of learning languages, the richness of his fancy, and the copiousness of his diction, render him one of the most extraordinary characters which England has furnished. Before he left his native country, he married a daughter of the late Dr. Shipley, Bishop of St. Asaph.
