1798 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

William Boscawen

David Rivers, in Literary Memoirs of Living Authors (1798) 1:61-62.

This gentleman published, in 1793, the Odes, Epodes, and Carmen Seculare of Horace, translated into English verse, in one volume, octavo. Though Mr. Boscawen does not appear to have been very singularly endued by nature with poetical fire, indispensable for that desideratum, which we may predict will never be supplied, a complete English Version of Horace, it is no contemptible panegyric, that his is, generally speaking, the best Translation of the odes which we have. He acknowledges himself indebted for many of his notes to the celebrated Dr. Foster of Eton College. A second volume consisting of a Translation of the Satires, Epistles, and Art of Poetry, by Mr. Boscawen has been announced.
