1798 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Sir James Bland Burges

David Rivers, in Literary Memoirs of Living Authors (1798) 1:79-80.

This ingenious gentleman is author of a poem, entitled, The Birth and Triumph of Love, published in quarto, in 1796. The plan is taken from a series of plates, The Birth and Triumph of Cupid, published by Mr. Tomkins in Bond Street, the beautiful designs of which originate from the elegant fancy of the Princess Elizabeth. This poem is exquisite in point of harmony of versification, beauty of imagery, splendour of diction, and delicacy of sentiment. Sir James Bland Burges formerly studied the law, and published, in 1783, an octavo volume on the Law of Insolvency, and a Letter to the Earl of Effingham on his lately proposed Act of Insolvency. In 1789, he published a pamphlet on the Abuses of County Courts.
