1853 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Mary Tighe

Frederic Rowton, in Female Poets of Great Britian (1853) 200.

This highly gifted lady was the daughter of the Rev. William Blanchford, of the county of Wicklow, where she was born in or about the year 1773. She is chiefly known by her splendid poem of Psyche, which for gorgeousness of colouring and refinement of imagination, is scarcely behind the best verses of Moore, while it is certainly more chaste and spiritual in its sentiment. Mrs. Tighe died in 1810.
