1876 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

John Payne Collier

Robert Carruthers, in Chambers's Cyclopaedia of English Literature, 3rd ed. (1876; 1879) 8:374-75.

Mr. John Payne Collier, referred to above, was early in the field as an editor of Elizabethan poets and dramatists. He was born in London, 1789. In 1820 he published The Poetical Decameron, and in 1831, his History of Dramatic Poetry — both works of merit which gratified the lovers of our old literature, and tended considerably to increase the number of such students.
