1788 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

John Pinkerton

Anonymous, in Catalogue of five hundred Celebrated Authors (1788).

A native of Scotland. His first works were of the poetical species, Rhymes published in 1781; Tales in Verse; and two Dithyrambic Odes on Enthusiam and Rapture. Mr. Pinkerton published in 1786 Letters of Literature in one volume octavo, under the name of Robert Heron, esquire; and in 1787 an Enquiry into the Antiquities of the Scythians and Gauls in one volume octavo. Mr. Pinkerton is endowed with vanity and good sense, with pedantry, originality, causticity and want of taste.
