1788 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. George Travis

Anonymous, in Catalogue of five hundred Celebrated Authors (1788).

Archdeacon of Chester. He published in 1784, in quarto, Letters to Mr. Gibbon, the historian, upon the authenticity of the seventh verse of the fifth chapter of the Epistle of St. John. This pamphlet is written with much ability, energy and eloquence, but is degraded by its virulence, intolerance and bigotry. The authenticity of the passage in question has been warmly contested among divines, and, though conceived to be of some value in establishing the doctrine of the trinity, has been given up by several of the orthodox. In the mean time Mr. Travis is unwilling to acknowledge either the fairness or sincerity of those, who have controverted his own opinion.
