WILLIAM BEATTIE (son of James Beattie of Dalton, Annandale who d. 1809). b. Dalton 1793; ed. Clarencefield academy 1807-13 and Univ. of Edin. 1813-20, M.D. 1818; studied in France, Italy and Germany 1823-26; physician to Duke of Clarence 8 years and private secretary to him 3 years; L.R.C.P. 1827; practised at Hampstead 1827-45; foreign sec. to British Archaeological Society; lost £7,000 in Albert Assurance Office Aug. 1869; author of Journal of a residence in Germany 2 vols. 1831; Scotland illustrated 2 vols. 1838; The Waldenses illustrated 2 vols 1838; The Danube 1844; Life of Thomas Campbell 3 vols. 1848. d. 13 Upper Berkeley st.
