SAMUEL ROGERS (3 son of Thomas Rogers of London, warehouseman, afterwards banker, d. June 1793). b. Newington Green, Stoke Newington 30 July 1763; educ. at private schools in Hackney and at Stoke Newington; entered the house of Welch and Rogers, bankers 80 Cornhill, London, became a partner 1785, when the firm was Welch, Rogers, Olding, and Rogers, and removed to 3 Freeman's court, Cornhill, head of the firm 1793, firm was Rogers, Towgood and co. at 29 Clement's lane, Lombard st. 1812, retired from business 1824; built a house for himself 22 St. James's place 1803; F.R.S. 17 Nov. 1796; F.S.A. 1789; declined the poet laureateship 1850; author of An ode to superstition, with some other poems 1786, anon.; The pleasures of memory 1792, anon, 15 ed. 1806; Columbus 1806, reprinted 1810 and 1812; Jacqueline 1814; Human life 1819; Italy, part 1, 1822 anon, part 2, 1828, very numerous editions; his art collections were sold at Christie's from 28 April 1856 for £49,731 10 9, sale occupied 19 days. d. 22 St. James's place, St. James's st.
