1865 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. Thomas Yalden

Mark Anthony Lower, in The Worthies of Sussex: Biographical Sketches (1865) 333.

THOMAS YALDEN, D.D. — This well-known divine and poet, the friend of Addison and Sacheverell, is said to have been the son of Mr. John Yalden of Sussex. He was born at Exeter in 1671, and educated at Magdalen College, Oxford. He obtained considerable church preferment from the Duke of Beaufort, and was much mixed up with the religious and political affairs of his time. He died in 1736. As his claim to any connection with Sussex is doubtful, I must refer to Chalmers's Biog. Dict., and the authorities there mentioned, for fuller particulars of his life.
