1776 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Matthew Prior

Oliver Goldsmith, in Beauties of English Poetry (1776); Works (1908) 9:238.

What Prior meant by this poem [Alma] I cannot understand: by the Greek motto to it, one would think it was either to laugh at the subject or his reader. There are some parts of it very fine; and let them save the badness of the rest.
