1744 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

John Hughes

Alexander Pope, February 1744; in Spence, Anecdotes, ed. Osburne (1966) 1:211.

Hughes was a good, humble-spirited man, a great admirer of Mr. Addison, and but a poor writer, except his play: that, very well. The story of him and Mrs. Oldfield is not at all likely.
