Many, many thanks for your kindness, and pray express my grateful acknowledgments to Mr. Merivale for his very elegant present. I make no doubt that it will fulfill your promise — that I shall read it with my first feelings — and that it will bring back to my mind that delicious evening (an evening in July) when I first discovered The Minstrel among some loose papers in my father's library. Alas! Alas! Five and thirty years have fled, and yet it seems but yesterday.
