1752 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Bp. Joseph Hall

Thomas Gray to Thomas Wharton, 19 December 1752; Poems of Mr. Gray, ed. Mason (1775) 224.

Bishop Hall's satires, called Virgidimiae, are lately republished. They are full of spirit and poetry; as much of the first as Dr. Donne, and far more of the latter: they were written at the university when he was about twenty-three years old, and in Queen Elizabeth's time.
