1776 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Sir John Denham

Oliver Goldsmith, in Beauties of English Poetry (1776); Works (1908) 9:230.

This poem by Denham [Coopers Hill], though it may have been exceeded by later attempts in description, yet deserves the highest applause, as it far surpasses all that went before it: the concluding part, though a little too much crowded is very masterly.
