1815 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Thomas Chatterton

Anonymous, "Epitaph on Chatterton" Morning Chronicle (4 January 1815).

Not by this lowly grave-mark doth appear
The quality of him reposing here;
For if desert had meted out his tomb,
Than Caria's* pile more famed had been the dome:
The matchless CHATTERTON beneath is laid,
Whose life was sorrow, and whose hopes, but shade!
Are not his works, his woes, his fate, and name,
Inscribed for ever in the book of Fame?
