1663 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Sir Walter Raleigh

Anonymous, "On Sir Walter Rawleigh" Recreation for Ingenious Head-peeces (1663) sig. O8.

If spight be pleas'd, when as her object's dead,
Or malice pleas'd, when it hath bruis'd the head,
Or envy pleas'd, when it hath what it would,
Then all are pleas'd, for Rawleighs blood is cold,
Which were it warm and active, would o'rcome,
And strike the two first blind, the other dumbe.
