1795 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

John Dryden

Robert Anderson, in Works of the British Poets (1795) 6:x.

Dryden may properly be called the father of English criticism. His Essay on Dramatic Poetry was the first regular and valuable treatise on the Art of Writing. It will not be easy to find, in all the opulence of our language, a treatise so artfully variegated with successive representations of opposite probabilities, so enlivened with imagery, so brightened with illustrations.
