1830 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

William Sotheby

John Taylor Esq., "To William Sotheby, Esq. on his Poem entitled Italy" Morning Post (14 May 1830).

Poet, Philosopher, high-gifted Sage,
Thy Muse had led me to majestic Rome,
Raising before me each long-honour'd dome,
With awful grandeur in her vivid page,
Where former Worthies still our hearts engage,
And Inspiration seems to fix her home,
To breathe her spirit in th' historic tome,
And will till Time shall reach his final age.
Nor to Rome only has she led my way,
But o'er fair Italy's enchanting views,
Where'er the Sun could dart his glowing ray,
Or pensive Eve shed her refreshing dews,
All, all, we in thy magic strains survey—
Hence with eternal Rome should live thy Muse.
