1798 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

James Macaulay

Alexander Campbell, in Introduction to the History of Poetry in Scotland (1798) 308-09.

Another contemporary of Burns's, JAMES MACAULEY, in 1788, published at Edinburgh, "Poems on various subjects, in Scotch and English" 8vo. This volume contains a great variety indeed; no wonder then, the pieces are of various and unequal merit. Many passages in these poems, are characteristic of true poetic genius; others fall too low for criticism. Were the author to select and revise carefully, such pieces as might now please his riper judgment, the public would then prize his best poems, according to their just pretentions to regard.
