1801 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Katherine Philips

Anonymous, "History of Knowledge, Learning, and Taste" in Universal Magazine 109 (December 1801) 406.

Mrs. Catherine Phillips, known by the name of the "Matchless Orinda," was much and deservedly esteemed for her poetical talents, and was unrivalled by the female wits of her time. Her poems are more admired for propriety and beauty of thought than harmony of versification, in which she was generally deficient.
