1680 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Sir Charles Sedley

Earl of Rochester, in "An Allusion to Horace" Poems on Several Occasions (1680) 42-43.

Sidley, as that prevailing, gentle Art,
That can with a resistless Charm impart,
The loosest wishes, to the chastest heart.

Betwixt declining Vertue, and Desire;
Till the poor vanquish't Maid dissolves away,
In Dreams all Night, in Sighs, and Tears, all day.
