1788 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Dr. John Wolcot

Anonymous, "Advice to Pension Hunters" Felix Farley's Bristol Journal (3 May 1788).

His LOUSIADS Peter Pindar wrote
To get a dinner and a coat,
It was an arch invention.
Full well he knew — a cunning man—
They'd stop his mouth with sop in pan
Alias — a Ch—r pension.

'Tis not the panegyric stile
Will gain the R—l ear or smile;
No folly can be greater—
Would you a bounteous harvest earn
By his example wisely learn
'Tis done by downright satire.
