1720 ca. ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Alexander Pope

Elizabeth Tollet, "The Triumvirate of Poets" 1720 ca.; Nichols, Select Collection of Poems (1780-82) 6:67.

Britain with Greece and Rome contended long
For lofty genius, and poetic song,
Till this Augustan age with Three was blest,
To fix the prize, and finish the contest.
In Addison, immortal Virgil reigns;
So pure his numbers, so refin'd his strains:
Of nature full, with more impetuous heat,
In Prior Horace shines, sublimely great.
Thy country, Homer! we dispute no more,
For Pope has fix'd it to his native shore.
