1750 ca. ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Sir Walter Raleigh

Thomas Edwards, "Occasioned by some Gentlemen's smoaking in the Author's Chambers, the Evening before a young Lady was to breakfast with him" 1750 ca.; Nichols, Select Collection of Poems (1780-82) 6:105.

Thou, Raleigh — for, with Coke of noisy fame,
With front of brass and steel endued,
I' Thou thee, and, in metre harsh and rude,
Build up my own on ruin of thy fame;
To future times may'st thou go down with blame,
Who, in the reign of peaceful King and geud,
Brought'st-in the weed that brought-in endless feud,
Like haggard hawk stooping at sordid game:
Hadst thou succeeded in thy wild design,
And given to Britain all Guiana's gold,
Small thanks had then been due to thee and thine;
But as thou fail'dst, right well the Monarch bold,
Arm'd with sure Counter-blast and wrath divine,
Thy forfeit life to greedy Spaniards sold.
