1735 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Aaron Hill

Bavius, "Epigram" Grub-Street Journal (6 November 1735).

Papers a full year advertis'd and puff'd
Most readers think with trifles chiefly stuff'd.
This knows PUFFERUS PRIMUS, the Hyp-doctor,
Who for th' Administration acts as proctor;
And in the Advertisements hides his number,
Lest it be thought but Literary lumber.

Dear Prompter, tho', the surer to defame,
To thy own whimsies thou hast set my name,
Yet, as a brother, I advise thee: Tread in
His steps, who is all tongues and authors read in;
And let it not be twice a week enroll'd,
How many of thy numbers are unsold.
