Of Dr. Hurd's literary intercourse with Dr. Warburton, Dr. Brown, the author of the "Essay on the characteristics," made no scruple of talking in very plain terms. Though a friend and admirer of the Bishop of Gloucester, he used frequently to say, "I cannot bring myself to give up the freedom of my mind to Warburton, and therefore we do not agree; but Dr. Hurd will never quarrel with him."
