1804 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

William Tooke, Note to The Duellist; Poetical Works of Charles Churchill (1804) 1:219-20.

Of Dr. Hurd's literary intercourse with Dr. Warburton, Dr. Brown, the author of the "Essay on the characteristics," made no scruple of talking in very plain terms. Though a friend and admirer of the Bishop of Gloucester, he used frequently to say, "I cannot bring myself to give up the freedom of my mind to Warburton, and therefore we do not agree; but Dr. Hurd will never quarrel with him."
