1804 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

William Smith of Covent Garden

William Tooke, Note to The Rosciad; Poetical Works of Charles Churchill (1804) 1:41n.

Smith, the genteel, the airy, and the smart,
Smith was just gone to school to say his part.

A very favourite actor in genteel comedy, particularly distinguished in Charles Surface, in the School for Scandal. He married a woman of fortune, and retired from the stage about the year 1788. In the year 1797, he was prevailed upon to act Charles, for the benefit of his friend King, which he did, notwithstanding the disadvantages of age and corpulence, with an ease and elegance that obtained the unanimous plaudits of a crowded house.
