1729 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Matthew Prior

Jane Brereton, "To Mrs. Mary Hale; Jan. 1, 1729. With Mr. Prior's Poems" Brereton, Poems on Several Occasions (1744) 89-90.

Gay Prior, fam'd for jocund Song,
Lov'd to amuse the Fair and Young;
Then wonder not, his Lays appear
To wish my Friend a happy Year.
May Health restor'd, a Mind at Ease,
Refreshing Nights, and chearful Days,
Be ever thine; and Joys still run,
Incessant as the circling Sun!

May'st thou, (ye Pow'rs regard my Pray'r!)
Be still Maria's tender Care!
Kind Heav'n did well for thee provide;
A Saint is both thy Guard, and Guide.
